During the distribution event, Abdulbasid Ahmad, the Programme Officer, highlighted that the primary goal of this activity is to equip farmers with the resources and knowledge to implement agroforestry practices to sustainably manage their land and resources. He noted that a similar effort had been made in Faru Maje and Ward B of Jibia LGA, where 2,200 tree seedlings were distributed. Among the varieties of economic trees distributed and planted within the community were locust bean (Parkia biglobosa), cashew (Anacardium occidentale), improved mangoes (Mangifera indica), and neem (Azadirachta indica).
The traditional leader of Riko Ward, accompanied by other traditional leaders and community stakeholders, expressed their gratitude towards WEP and UNDP for the commendable project. He remarked that in all his years of leadership, the community has never experienced an intervention of this magnitude. He emphasized that if the agricultural inputs and knowledge acquired through this initiative are fully utilized, hunger could be eradicated in the community within the year. He urged the beneficiaries to plant and nurture the trees diligently, noting that the economic trees would not only serve environmental purposes but also provide future economic benefits.
Many beneficiaries acknowledged the value of the trees and expressed their appreciation, noting that they had faced challenges in accessing such improved tree seedlings before this intervention.
