Katsina-born Rector Makes History: Dr. Albaba Elected as First Northerner to Lead ATUPA in Nigeria

By Aminu Magaji Idris

In a groundbreaking achievement, Rector of Katsina State Institute of Technology and Management (KSITM), Dr. Babangida Albaba Abubakar, has been elected as the first Northerner to serve as the Country Representative of Nigeria on the Executive Board of the Association of Technical Universities and Polytechnics in Africa (ATUPA).

This historic feat was announced in a formal letter from ATUPA Secretary General, Jahou Samba Faal, dated September 3rd, 2024, congratulating Dr. Albaba on his election to this prestigious position.

Dr. Albaba's election is a testament to his leadership excellence, academic distinction, and commitment to Technological Innovations and technical education in Nigeria and Africa. As Country Representative, Dr. Albaba will play a crucial role in shaping the future of technical education in Nigeria and contributing to ATUPA's mission to promote excellence in technical and vocational education and training across Africa.

This achievement brings pride to Katsina State and Nigeria, showcasing the country's expertise and leadership in technical education. Dr. Albaba's election is expected to foster greater collaboration and knowledge sharing between Nigerian institutions and their African counterparts, driving innovation and economic growth.

The Association of Technical Universities and Polytechnics in Africa (ATUPA) has a rich history dating back to its inception as the Commonwealth Association of Technical Universities and Polytechnics in Africa (CAPA). Established in 1987, CAPA aimed to promote cooperation and collaboration among technical institutions in Africa, with a focus on quality assurance, capacity building, and networking.

In 2013, CAPA underwent a transformation, expanding its membership beyond Commonwealth countries and rebranding itself as the Association of Technical Universities and Polytechnics in Africa (ATUPA). This strategic move reflected the growing need for pan-African collaboration in technical education, as well as the increasing importance of technical universities and polytechnics in driving Africa's economic development.

Today, ATUPA is a premier organization representing technical institutions across Africa, with a membership spanning over 20 countries. Its mission is to foster excellence in technical education, promote innovation, and enhance the capacity of member institutions to contribute to Africa's socio-economic development.

Dr. Albaba's election as Country Representative marks an exciting new chapter in ATUPA's history, as Nigeria takes on a leadership role in shaping the future of technical education on the continent.
